The winter is considered the off-season by many lighthouse enthusiasts and this is certainly true in our region. The Calvert Marine Museum has answered the call again this year to beat the winter doldrums by hosting Chesapeake Lights. By the time you receive this newsletter, the Chapter – along with other regional “keepers of the lights” - will have participated in this annual event, scheduled for January 16. This fun and informative event gives lighthouse groups the chance to meet and talk with visitors about their lighthouses and hobnob with other lighthouse enthusiasts. This year’s keynote speaker was Wayne Kirklin, author of the Lightships: Floating Lighthouses of the Mid-Atlantic. Some of you will remember that Wayne was a special guest at Turkey Point Lighthouse during last year’s Maryland Lighthouse Challenge.

On tap for the publicity team this spring is the annual Piney Point Lighthouse Celebration, to occur on Saturday, May 8th and Sunday, May 9th. This event will be held at the Piney Point Lighthouse Museum and Historic Park from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm each day. The event is fun for the entire family and features maritime exhibits and demonstrations, kids activities, food, lighthouse tours and Potomac River wade-in on Saturday. You can learn more about the Piney Point Lighthouse Celebration at 301-994-1471 or publicity@cheslights.org.
