6th Annual Maryland Lighthouse Challenge -
"Road to the Lighthouse!" !

Mark your calendars!
    • September 20-21, 2008
    • 8:00 am - 6:00 pm

Join the Chesapeake Chapter and the lighthouse organizations of Maryland for the 6th Annual Maryland Lighthouse Challenge. In light of 2008 being an election year, we will be incorporating an election year theme!

The original ten Challenge lights remain the same: Turkey Point, Concord Point, Seven Foot Knoll and Chesapeake Lightship, Hooper Strait, Drum Point, Cove Point, Point Lookout, Piney Point and Fort Washington.

Visit any or all during the two day period (in any order) and collect a complimentary souvenir at each. Visit all ten and collect a special souvenir, and "cast a vote" for your favorite!

For an even greater "challenge", we are including two 2008 BONUS LIGHTS to this year's event - offshore Sandy Point Shoal Lighthouse (can be viewed from land), and the newly constructed Blackistone Lighthouse Replica (a short boat ride from the St. Clement's Island Museum). Note: Due to the additional time it will take to see them, Bonus Lights are optional "add-on" attractions and do not count toward Challenge completion.

Click to download the event brochure in PDF format.

Check the MD Challege page for continuing updated information. Inquiries: challenge@cheslights.org

Cape St. George Rises from the Rubble!
The Cape St. George Light, which guided so many mariners to a safe harbor on the Forgotten Coast, will live on as an important part of the maritime history of Florida’s Panhandle thanks to decated volunteeers.

The Cape St. George Lightouse collapsed on October 21, 2005. In the spring of 2006, the St. George Lighthouse Association, established in 2004, worked with the State of Florida DEP and successfully salvaged the pieces of the fallen Light. Volunteers cleaned the old mortar off more than 20,000 of the original bricks so that they could be re-used in the reconstruction of the lighthouse.

In 2007, the St. George Lighthouse Association received State Historic Preservation Grant funds which enabled the reconstruction of the tower to begin.

On April 2, 2008 a crane lifted the new lantern room atop the rebuild lighthouse. For more information, visit stgeorgelight.org.
